Out on a spring day beside
The Winding River, seeing
The many palace gates fronting
The river bank barred
And deserted, then wondering
For whom now reeds and willows
Put out their glory of green.When once the imperial standards
Came to the South Park here,
The whole place was alight with
Colour; the first lady from Zhaoyang
Palace, sitting with our lord
In his carriage; palace ladies
Riding in front carrying bows
And arrows, their white steeds
Champing on golden bits; a lass
Would aim into the clouds, bringing
Down a pair of birds in flight.
Bright eyes, shining teeth, where
Are they now? Wandering ghost
Cannot return; the clear Wei ever
Flows east, and the road through
Jiange is deep; the departed
And those remaining have no news
Of each other; any born with a heart
Must let tears course down his cheeks;
Only you, grasses, flowers and river
Are as careless as ever! Evening
And tribesmen riders raise dust
As they enter the city;
I return to the southern suburbs
But turn and look expectantly
Away into the north.
